Stomatia was named by Helbling (1779) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 557]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Stomatiinae by MacNeil (1960); to Stomatellidae by Ladd (1966); to Trochidae by Short and Potter (1987); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stomatellinae by Wilson (1993) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
