Balvia was named by Lange (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302,1042]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Balviinae by Korn (2006); and to Prionoceratidae by Furnish et al. (2009).
