Istycoceras was named by Pavlov (1967). Its type is Istycoceras bodylevskyi.

It was synonymized subjectively with Crimites by Furnish et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Emilitinae by Leonova and Bogoslovskaya (1990), Leonova (2002), Korn (2006) and Leonova and Boiko (2015).
