Venericardia urutiensis was named by Marwick (1926) [TYPE LOCALITY: Late Miocene (Tongaporutuan), North Island, New Zealand]. It is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Venericardia (Venericardia) urutiensis by Fleming (1966); it was recombined as Purpurocardia urutiensis by Beu et al. (1990).
