Taxonomy
Venericardia penerectangularis was named by Bartrum and Powell (1928) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene (Opoitian); North Island, New Zealand]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Venericardia (Venericardia) penerectangularis by Fleming (1966); it was recombined as Purpurocardia penerectangularis by Beu et al. (1990).
