Taxonomy
Venericardia fyfei was named by Finlay and Marwick (1937) [TYPE LOCALITY: Paleocene (Wangaloan), South Island, New Zealand]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Venericardia (Venericardia) fyfei by Fleming (1966); it was recombined as Purpurocardia fyfei by Beu et al. (1990).
