Venericardia ponderosa was named by Suter (1913) [TYPE LOCALITY: Late Oligocene (Duntroonian); Chatton Fm, Waikaia, South Island, New Zealand]. It is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Venericardia (Megacardita) ponderosa by Fleming (1966); it was recombined as Megacardita ponderosa by Beu et al. (1990).
