Tugali was named by Gray (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 530,899]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Bartrum (1919); to Emarginulinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Fissurellidae by Kensley and Pether (1986) and Short and Potter (1987); to Emarginulidae by Wilson (1993); and to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
