Nuculana (Dacryomya) was named by Agassiz (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr l J Tith Sepkoski's reference number: 159]. Its type is Nucula lacryma.

It was reranked as Dacromya by Agrawal and Kachhara (1979) and Vokes (1980).

It was assigned to Bivalvia by Agrawal and Kachhara (1979); to Nuculana by Agassiz (1840) and Goto (1983); to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002); to Polidevciidae by Ros-Franch et al. (2014); and to Nuculanidae by Vokes (1980) and Hautmann et al. (2015).
