Gwyneddichnium was named by Bock (1952). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Gwyneddichnium majore.

It was assigned to Gwyneddichnidae by Bock (1952), Kuhn (1958) and Haubold (1974); and to Tanystropheidae by Hunt and Lucas (2007).
