Trigonostoma smithfieldensis was named by Oleksyshyn (1960) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Pleistocene; Virginia-Florida.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Trigonostoma (Emmonsella) smithfieldensis by Olsson (1967).
