Westerna was named by Webster (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. It is not extant. Its type is Loxonema gigantea.

It was corrected as Westernia by Fenton and Fenton (1924).

It was assigned to Trochidae by Webster (1905); to Gastropoda by Fenton and Fenton (1924); to Palaeotrochidae by Knight et al. (1960); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Subulitidae by Krawczyński (2002).
