Metasuchia was named by Benton and Clark (1988). It was considered monophyletic by Schwarz-Wings et al. (2011).

It was reranked as the suborder Metasuchia by Schwarz-Wings et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Mesoeucrocodylia by Sereno et al. (2001), Sereno and Larsson (2009) and Andrade et al. (2011); and to Crocodyliformes by Schwarz-Wings et al. (2011).
