Codonocheilus was named by Whiteaves (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Codonocheilidae.
It was assigned to Architaenoglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Codonocheilidae by Knight et al. (1960) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
