Taxonomy
Phoca carcinophaga was named by Hombron and Jacquinot (1843). It is extant. It is the type species of Lobodon.

It was recombined as Ogmorhinus (Lobodon) carcinophaga by Trouessart (1898); it was recombined as Ogmorhinus (Lobodon) carcinophagus by Trouessart (1904) and Friant (1947); it was recombined as Ogmorhinus carcinophaga by Turner (1912); it was recombined as Lobodon carcinophagus by Scheffer and Rice (1963), Berg (1989), Koretsky (2001) and Deméré et al. (2003); it was recombined as Lobodon carcinophaga by Gray (1844), Gray (1850), Gill (1866), Gray (1866), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Riedman (1990), Adam (2005), Werdelin and Peigne (2010), Cullen et al. (2014), Berta et al. (2018) and Kienle and Berta (2019).
