Afrocypraea was named by Schilder (1932) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. Its type is Cypraea chubbi.

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bernayinae by Soriano (2006).
