Patella fornicata was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Recent; Eastern Canada-Central America, Europe. TYPE: Unknown.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Crypta fornicata by Holmes (1859); it was recombined as Crepidula fornicata by Dall (1892), Martin (1904), Richards (1943), Abbott (1954), Richards (1962), Spencer and Campbell (1987), Rosenberg (2005) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
