Alabina was named by Dall (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Alabinidae.

It was assigned to Alabinidae by Dall (1927); to Cerithiadae by Weisbord (1962); to Diastomatinae by Hoerle (1972); to Scaliolidae by Todd (2001); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Alabininae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
