Alaskozygopleura was named by Blodgett (1992) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u Sepkoski's reference number: 797]. Its type is Alaskozygopleura crassicostata.

It was assigned to Pseudozygopleurinae by Blodgett (1992); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeozygopleuridae by Heidelberger and Bandel (1999) and Wagner (2023).
