Natica heros was named by Say (1822) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Recent; Massachusetts-Texas.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Polinices (Lunatia) heros by Dall (1892); it was recombined as Polynices (Lunatia) heros by Martin (1904); it was recombined as Polinices heros by Johnson (1934), Richards and Harbison (1942) and Richards (1962); it was recombined as Lunatia heros by Abbott (1954), Spencer and Campbell (1987) and Ward (1998); it was recombined as Lunatia herosa by Ward (1993); it was recombined as Euspira heros by Hendy et al. (2008).
