Auriptygma was named by Perner (1903) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl D Gedi Sepkoski's reference number: 362]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Holopea (Auriptygma) by Williams and Breger (1916).

It was assigned to Holopea by Williams and Breger (1916); to Meekospiridae by Knight et al. (1960) and Nützel et al. (2000); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
