Dicynodontinae was named by Owen (1859) [nom. transl. ex Dicynodontidae Owen, 1859].

It was assigned to Dicynodontidae by Kuhn (1946), Haughton and Brink (1954), Barry (1974), King (1988), Battail and Surkov (2000) and Ivakhnenko (2008).
