Anhangueridae was named by Campos and Kellner (1985).
It was synonymized subjectively with Ornithocheiridae by Unwin (2001) and Unwin and Martill (2007); it was reranked as the unranked clade Anhangueridae by Rodrigues and Kellner (2008), Rodrigues and Kellner (2013) and Richards et al. (2023).
It was assigned to Pterodactyloidea by Campos and Kellner (1985) and Wang and Zhou (2006); to Pterodactyloidea by Rodrigues and Kellner (2008); to Pteranodontoidea by Bantim et al. (2014) and Aureliano et al. (2014); to Ornithocheiroidea by Headden and Campos (2014); and to Anhangueria by Rodrigues and Kellner (2013), Holgado and Pegas (2020) and Richards et al. (2023).
