Venus notata was named by Say (1822) [DISTRIBUTION: Massachusetts-Recent; Virginia-Georgia.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Mercenaria notata by Holmes (1858) and Holmes (1860); it was recombined as Venus mercenaria notata by Dall (1903); it was recombined as Venus (Mercenaria) mercenaria notata by Gardner (1943).
