Mercenaria plena was named by Conrad (1869) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene; Virginia.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Venus plena by Heilprin (1887) and Glenn (1904); it was recombined as Venus (Mercenaria) plena by Gardner (1943).
