Brachytrema was named by Morris and Lycett (1851) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Brachytremidae.
It was assigned to Brachytremidae by Cossmann (1906); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Brachytrematidae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
