Ptychosalpinx scalaspira was named by Conrad (1868) [DISTRIBUTION: Early-Late Pliocene; Virginia-Florida.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Nassa scalaspira by Dall (1892); it was recombined as Nassarius scalaspira by Ward and Blackwelder (1987); it was recombined as Ilyanassa scalaspira by Gardner (1943) and Hendy et al. (2008).
