Buccinum harpuloides was named by Conrad (1844) [DISTRIBUTION: Early-Late Pliocene; Virginia-North Carolina.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Tritia harpuloides by Conrad (1863); it was recombined as Ptychosalpinx (Paranassa) harpuloides by Conrad (1868); it was recombined as Nassa harpuloides by Dall (1892); it was recombined as Ilyanassa harpuloides by Gardner (1943) and Hendy et al. (2008).
