Buccinum aratum was named by Say (1824) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Pliocene; Maryland-North Carolina.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Tritia arata by Conrad (1862); it was recombined as Ptychosalpinx (Paranassa) arata by Conrad (1868); it was recombined as Ilyanassa (Paranassa) arata by Dall (1892); it was recombined as Paranassa arata by Cossmann (1901); it was recombined as Ilyanassa arata by Hendy et al. (2008).
