Taxonomy
Ornithocephalus was named by Soemmerring (1812). Its type is Ornithocephalus antiquus. It is the type genus of Ornithocephalidae, Ornithocephalinae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pterodactylus by Holl (1829).

It was assigned to Draconoidea by Fitzinger (1826); to Pterodactyli by Fitzinger (1843); to Ornithocephalidae by Hay (1902); and to Ornithocephalinae by Hay (1930).
