Comptonia was named by L'Héritier de Brutelle (1789). It is extant.

It was reranked as Myrica (Comptonia) by Tanai (1961).

It was assigned to Myrica by Tanai (1961); and to Myricaceae by L'Héritier de Brutelle (1789), Knowlton (1919), Liu et al. (1996) and Liang et al. (2010).
