Bufonaria was named by Schumacher (1817) [m. kosnik taxon no: 7930]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Ranella (Bufonaria) by Martin (1899) and Vredenburg (1925); it was reranked as Bursa (Bufonaria) by Cox (1948) and MacNeil (1960).

It was assigned to Ranella by Martin (1899) and Vredenburg (1925); to Bursa by Cox (1948) and MacNeil (1960); and to Bursidae by Wilson (1993) and Beu (2005).
