Hesperotestudo crassiscutata
Taxonomy
Testudo crassiscutata was named by Leidy (1889). Its type specimen is USNM 983, a partial skeleton (partial plastron, left femur, and left tibia), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pitts Bridge, which is in a Pleistocene fluvial-lacustrine sandstone in Texas.
It was recombined as Geochelone (Caudochelys) crassiscutata by Auffenberg (1963); it was recombined as Geochelone crassiscutata by Holman (1985); it was considered a nomen dubium by Williams (1953); it was recombined as Hesperotestudo crassiscutata by Meylan (2000), Cisneros (2005), Vlachos and Rabi (2018) and Vlachos (2018).
