Chonetes mesolobus decipiens was named by Girty (1912). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Mesolobus decipiens by Shimer and Shrock (1944); it was recombined as Mesolobus mesolobus decipiens by Dunbar and Condra (1932) and Hoare (1961).
