Taxonomy
Samburupithecus kiptalami was named by Ishida and Pickford (1997). Its type specimen is KNM SH 8531, a maxilla, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Samburu Hills Site SH 22, which is in a Tortonian/Miocene fluvial-lacustrine conglomerate in the Namurungule Formation of Kenya. It is the type species of Samburupithecus.
