Afropithecus was named by Leakey and Leakey (1986). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Hominoidea by Leakey and Leakey (1986) and Anyonge (1991); to Afropithecini by Andrews (1992); and to Proconsulidae by Zalmout et al. (2010).
