Carcharias polygyrus was named by Agassiz (1838). It is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Carcharodon polygyrus by Agassiz (1843); it was synonymized subjectively with Carcharodon megalodon by Chapman and Cudmore (1924); it was misspelled as Carcharodon polygurus by Clark (1895) and Rapp (1946); it was synonymized subjectively with Carcharias subauriculatus by Marsili et al. (2007).
