Cyrtospira was named by Ulrich and Scofield (1897) [Courtesy of Ulrich. Sepkoski's age data: O Llde S Ludl Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is not extant. Its type is Cyrtospira tortilis.

It was reranked as Subulites (Cyrtospira) by Knight et al. (1960).

It was assigned to Subulites by Knight et al. (1960); to Subulitidae by Ulrich and Scofield (1897) and Nützel et al. (2000); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
