Mytilus grayanus was named by Dunker (1853) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Recent; Japan, northeastern Asia.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Crenomytilus grayanus by Noda et al. (1984), Ogasawara et al. (1985) and Ando (2024).
