Drepanocheilus was named by Meek (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-l T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 157,614].

It was assigned to Arrhoginae by Popenoe (1983); to Aporrhaidae by Abbass (1967), Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983) and Harzhauser and Mandic (2001); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Anchurinae by Kollmann (2009).
