Taxonomy
Fossarus was named by Philippi (1841) [m. kosnik taxon no: 4745 Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 123,1066]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Fossaridae by Martin (1904), Gardner (1947) and Wilson (1993); to Planaxidae by Todd (2001); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Fossarinae by Bouchet et al. (2005) and Bandel (2006).
