Madrepora palmata was named by Lamarck (1816). It is extant.

It was recombined as Isopora palmata by Spencer (1902); it was recombined as Astrhelia palmata by Vaughan (1904) and Wells (1956); it was recombined as Acropora palmata by Kiessling (2003) and Kiessling (2008).
