Gourmya was named by Fischer (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R Sepkoski's reference number: 614]. It is extant. Its type is Cerithium guormyi.

It was reranked as Cerithium (Gourmya) by Oppenheim (1900), Vredenburg (1928) and Shuto (1978).
