Gymnocerithium was named by Cossmann (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath K Nc]. It is the type genus of Gymnocerithiidae.

It was assigned to Procerithiidae by Wenz (1938); to Gymnocerithiidae by Golikov and Starobogatov (1987); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Campanilidae by Bouchet (2011).
