Gyrodes was named by Conrad (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-u T Than Sepkoski's reference number: 4,157]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Gyrodinae.

It was reranked as Natica (Gyrodes) by Dickerson (1914).

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Whitfield (1865); to Natica by Dickerson (1914); to Naticidae by Abbass (1967); to Ampullospirinae by Marincovich (1977); to Gyrodinae by Sohl (1964), Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983), Kase (1984), Popenoe et al. (1987) and Dockery (1993); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ampullospiridae by Kase and Ishikawa (2003).
