Harpagodes was named by Gill (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath K Ceno-l Sepkoski's reference number: 122,157,558]. Its type is Pterocera pelagi.

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Harpagodinae by Kollmann (2009).
