Hemicerithium was named by Cossmann (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni R]. It is extant. Its type is Cerithium imperfectum.

It was reranked as Cerithium (Hemicerithium) by Vignal (1911).

It was assigned to Cerithium by Vignal (1911); to Cerithiinae by Hoerle (1972); to Cerithiadae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
