E. Perrier 1928Pas d'os coronoïdes (ainsi que dans toutes les familles suivantes); os nasal contigu au préfronlal (différence avec les COLUBRIDAE); squamosal court, appliqué sur les os crâniens, qui forment sans lui la paroi de la boîte crânienne, os carré vertical; dents petites, nombreuses et serrées aux deux mâchoires, et aussi sur les os palatins et ptérygoïdiens. Aucun vestige de membres ni de ceintures. Yeux libres, petits, à pupille verticale; écailles dorsales lisses, irisées. Face ventrale à lames transversales.
