Stratigraphy
Formation:Codore Member:Chiguaje
Stratigraphic resolution:member
Stratigraphy comments: This collection had a L. Miocene age assigned. However: The Codore formation is divided into three formal members: El Jebe, Chiguaje, and Algodones. The El Jebe and Algodones Members were deposited in a fluvial environment, whereas the Chiguaje Member represents a marine transgression (Quiroz and Jaramillo, 2010) and records cetaceans (Aguirre-Fernández et al., 2017a; 2017b). The age of the Codore Formation is regarded as late Miocene to early Pliocene based on the presence of the palynomorph Echitricolporites spinosus (Hambalek et al., 1994; Quiroz and Jaramillo, 2010). The contact of the underlying Urumaco Formation and the Codore Formation is at ca. 6 Ma according to Smith et al. (2010). Foraminiferans of the Chiguaje Member are indicative of the early to middle Pliocene (ca. 4–3 Ma; Smith et al., 2010:fig. 2).
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology:gray "shale"
Includes fossils?Y
Lithology description: dark gray laminated mudstone and shale interbedded with muddy sandstone containing abundant mollusk fragments grading to limestones with oysters
Environment:marine indet.
Geology comments: The Chiguaje Member represents a short transgressive event between two continental members (i.e., El Jebe and Algodones, Hambalek et al. 1994).
