Geography
Country:Spain
Coordinates: 28.1° North, 15.7° West (view map)
Paleocoordinates:29.0° North, 15.8° West
Basis of coordinate:estimated from map
Geographic resolution:outcrop
Time
Period:Quaternary Epoch:Pleistocene
10 m.y. bin:Cenozoic 6
Key time interval:Early/Lower Pleistocene
Age range of interval:2.58800 - 0.78100 m.y. ago
Age estimate:1.8 ± .03 to 1.75 ± .03 Ma (K-Ar)
Stratigraphy
Stratigraphic resolution:bed
Stratigraphy comments: The magnetic polarity of the basaltic lava flow directly underlying the marine deposits at Los Llanos de Tumas (Agaete) is normal and has a K/Ar age of 1.80 +-0.03 Ma. The magnetic polarity of the basaltic lava flow overlying the deposits at Cementerio (Agaete) is reversed and the K/Ar age is 1.75 +-0.03 Ma. The two ages agree perfectly with their polarities and correspond to the upper limit of the Olduvai event.
Lithology and environment
Primary lithology: poorly lithified calcareous conglomerate
Lithology description: calcretised fossiliferous conglomerates, rich in algae
Environment:coastal indet.
Taphonomy
Modes of preservation:body
Size of fossils:macrofossils
Collection methods and comments
Collection excludes:some genera
Collection methods:field collection
Reason for describing collection:biostratigraphic analysis
Taxonomic list comments:List is only certain molluscs: "species that do not present a climatically significant ecology (cosmopolitan species, species with a geographic biodistribution in both the north and south Atlantic, rare endemic Canarian species) are not mentioned in this work."
